P90x Workout Changed My Life

,
P90x Workout Changed My Life
Insane Muscle Girls :

I was once crazy about doing exercise when I was a child. But when I became a housewife, all my time was occupied by doing housework and taking care of my children. Time has changed me to an ordinary woman. My muscle became flabby. My mood was always bad and my youth faded away day by day.

P90x Workout Changed My Life

Until one day, while I was surfing the Internet, my heart was grasped by the healthy and lively girl in the home page of the Beach Boy. Her beauty and strong appearance just is like I used to be. Especially when I saw a woman who is almost fifty but still has a figure younger than mine, because I am just thirty. I was woken up by the P90x extreme fitness training system and insanity 60 days workout program. I am aware that I need some changes; I need more energy and should have a higher pursuit. "No time for exercise" is just an excuse for the women who are lazy. There is no ugly woman, only lazy ones - only exercise can hold your youth.

So without hesitation, I selected the insanity 60 days workouts and decided to buy P90x DVD. I did what the coach told me strictly. I felt myself refreshed and relaxed every time I took insanity 60 days program. That is really good for me. At home, I can also be a coach of my families, which makes them healthy too. Obviously, my youth come back and I enjoy my life more.

Now, I am also fascinated with the yoga training offered by P90x. The unity of the movement let me get completely relaxed. At the same time, the experience of fulfillment is a kind of enjoyment for me. Since 2002, I have learned yoga from magazines. These magazines gave me a lot wrong information on how to learn yoga correctly. Now, with p90x plan, I have a better understanding about yoga.

Due to the small town where has no club for yoga, I usually do yoga just at home. After doing a set of movements with P90x plan, I always can be made to the most comfortable body adjustment. Now, it has become an integral part of my life. I can feel my body become more well-balanced and elegant. My balance and the coordinated ability have been much better, and my flexibility is obviously increased. From P90x lesson, I have learned not to torment myself just for a few kilograms weight reduction. It is more important to be happy and healthy.

Misguided Reasons Behind Your Visits to the Gym, and How They Will Ruin Your Life

Misguided Reasons Behind Your Visits to the Gym, and How They Will Ruin Your Life
Insane Muscle Girls :

It's 2010 now. At least that's what the little numbers in the bottom right corner of my computer are telling me as I hold the mouse pointer over them. Then again, this is a really old computer and I don't know how much I can trust it, especially since I just watched Eagle Eye (excuse me while I unplug my wireless adapter and put a big magnet within arm's reach). Regardless, we as humans have evolved enough to put much of our continued advancement in the hands of experts in specific fields. Geneticists make advances in genetics, rocket scientists build cooler and more-and-more-likely-to-be-considered-a-threat-by-the-aliens-that-are-watching-us rockets, and farmers...well, they seem to be pretty good with the genetics stuff lately, too.

Misguided Reasons Behind Your Visits to the Gym, and How They Will Ruin Your Life

I'm far from an expert at anything, really. I used to be a pretty good magician, but I would never call myself an expert; not out of modesty, but out of a strong desire not to be mistaken for a LARP-er (Google it) and wind up getting drawn and quartered in a cardboard castle. I am, however, familiar enough with general common sense to know that there is no reason on this planet why we should not be taking better care of ourselves physically through some level of active lifestyle.

It is an indisputable fact that our bodies need physical exercise in order to function properly. We are built for a grueling lifestyle of building shelter out of stone or ice, hunting animals insanely bigger than us with sharpened sticks, and wrestling cat-shaped piles of muscle and teeth that enjoy eating people-shaped piles of meat.

Then one day someone took a circle-shaped rock (or possibly an air-filled rubber tube encompassing an aluminum circle, but I doubt it) and used it to push around a crude device that made moving rocks and wood and things a lot easier, and we can fast forward to the day where I'm writing this using touch typing instead of carving it into bark, and you may damned well be reading this in bed on a device that weighs less than your pillow.

My point? We now have to make time around our busy schedule of working, sleeping and watching House to keep ourselves healthy. Many people don't think much about it, and others have simply have given up, but odds are that if you're reading this, regardless of how iPod-ish a device you're reading it on, you haven't given up yet or are at least seriously considering making a commitment to your well-being.

Here is where your motives behind your decision to stay active and healthy make a big impact, as they may well begin to define the person who inhabits the new you-shaped body. I'm going to list a few of the reasons that I see people citing as why they're going to start hitting the gym. Then I'm going to suggest just why you might want to reconsider your chief motivation.

To Impress Him/Her

This is a tough one to get away from because whether you know it or not, everything you do you're doing to get laid, and I don't want to hear any arguments out of you about it. If you believe the Democrats we came from monkeys (or possibly space. Scientologists are Democrats, too, right?). And unless you're harboring a grudge against the space-pirate who imprisoned you in your current meat-sack, then you have one single purpose in life: sex. More specifically, reproduction, but that's a longer word and I only want to type it once. At some ancient level, all of our decisions are made in order to advance our chances of breeding with the most attractive mate possible. There are all kinds of factors on how physical form relates to health, and how health increases the odds of successfully raising offspring, and I could go into it further but like I said earlier, I'm not an expert in much. Basically, Gisele Bundchen equals good. (For you women reading, her husband is the rough equivalent. I think.) While it is perfectly natural for us to be (entirely too) attracted to someone like her, everyone reading this is exactly three Super Bowl rings and one cleft chin away from ever winning her over.

While she might be off the market, there are plenty of other women out there, and for each one of them, there's a guy who wants to do something to make her notice him, and a lot of them have decided that washboard abs and an Incredible Hulk upper torso/arms are the way to do it. So what do they do? Get a membership at a gym (good), possibly see a trainer about a program designed to gain some size and definition (hey, it's your body. Shape it as you please), and then use her, or even just the desire to be physically attractive to women in general, as their primary motivation to keep going to the gym (no, you fool!).

How It Will Bite You In The Ass

Here's a fun experiment. Go to a bar. Nowhere too loud, 'cause I want you to be able to hear other people talking. Now scan the room. I want you to find someone. He should be pretty easy to spot. He's wearing a tight t-shirt. It's either black, white, or it has some faded or indecipherable design on the front. It's only tucked in above his belt buckle, which is probably super cool. He obviously works out, a fact that is most obvious by his arms. They're hard to miss, because the sleeves of his t-shirt are shorter than they should be, if they're present at all (the North American Sleeve Weevil can eat the sleeves of the average t-shirt overnight). He's also probably well tanned.

Now go sit near enough that you can hear him talk, especially when it appears that he is making a move on a girl. I'll wait here.

I'm willing to bet that at some point during his conversation he brought up "yeah, I hit the gym when I have time," contrastingly mixed in with "I dunno, I gotta hit the gym," mixed in with a healthy massive dose of "Forget about that guy. You can tell he doesn't even work out." He probably also sounds kind of like Keanu Reeves while he's saying this. Whoa! This is especially entertaining if he is talking to a female friend of yours who you had previously instructed to be clearly unimpressed with his physique. In case you aren't actually in a bar trying this out right now, just visualize The Situation.

My point is this... If your reasons for staying fit are solely so that you can impress members of the opposite sex, then it is increasingly likely that you will wind up having little else to present as your social personality, and that can be really irritating to be around. Yes, fit equals attractive, but Gym Douchebag usually equals, well, douchebag. He's one dimensional and seems to come off as thinking that he's better than anyone with a higher Body Mass Index (for the record my BMI is 25.1. Apparently I am overweight).

Nobody wants to be that guy, and fewer women than you'd think want anything with him other than a few hours and hopefully no Judd Apatow-style comedic fallout. And before you think to yourself (or say out loud to no one) "Hey, a few hours is all I'm after," grow up. Yeah it's fun from time to time, but the lifestyle that generally accompanies it is so counterproductive as far as your health is concerned that in the end, it's nothing more than a real easy way to get sick.

Consider...
Being physically fit is already a step in the right direction to being attractive. There's no need to focus solely on that as your motivation, seeing as it comes as a natural side effect. This doesn't mean that you can't take off our shirt at the beach and flaunt your abs (hell, why else would you have them?), it's just unnecessary to draw any more attention than you're already getting by talking about it all the time.

To Be More Intimidating
Tired of being pushed around by those playground (or office, or carpool, or subway...) bullies? Sick of hiding extra lunch money in some kind of James Bond-esque shoe compartment? Here's the answer... secretly join a gym, visualize your tormentor's face each time you knock off a rep, and get steadily bigger until one day it dawns on everyone: you're huge. Suddenly everyone is nicer to you, everyone listens to you, and no one takes your lunch money. In fact, all you have to do is flex and suddenly your friends/enemies/coworkers/Gisele Bundchen are all buying your lunch for you. Or maybe you just want people to take you more seriously, and getting big can't hurt, can it? From time to time when you raise your voice you get your way. It's not like you abuse it, right?

How It Will Bite You In The Ass

You're going to get your ass kicked. Don't argue. It is going to happen. See, it's great that you can do a whole Arnie-load of pushups. Really, that is awesome. The world needs people who can do whole piles of pushups. But if you insist on using largeness to influence how people behave around you, you're going to piss people off, which you might not be too worried about. I mean, you're HUGE! But fighting is a very different thing. If it happens to be something that the person you've pissed off is particularly good at, then size really isn't that much of a factor.

Need proof? Watch "Karate Kid."

And you, in all your new found enormousness, will eventually run into Danny Larusso (I hope you all know that he's the karate kid) or some of his friends, and get your ass kicked. If, however, you run into Danny Larusso AND some of his friends, Google "How to Win a Fight Against 20 Children."

Consider...
...the fact that by simply working out, your body releases endorphins. These make you feel good, which generally puts you in a good state of mind. With a good state of mind comes confidence. Maybe not a lot, but some. And yes, you'll get bigger, too.

It is the natural cycle of the gym. Yes, those first few weeks might hurt like hell, and you sure won't see results immediately, but in the long run, the payoff is more than just improved physique. It comes with better self image, which can lead to positive influences on all sorts of situations.

Balancing Out the Bad With the Good

There are a lot of ways to have fun in this world, and while some of us ride horses at breakneck speed or swim with the dolphins in Hawaii, many of us embrace equally safer and more dangerous pastimes: binge drinking and unhealthy eating are two examples which spring to mind.

While outside of Montana binge drinking is not likely to get you a broken neck by being thrown from a horse into a barn wall, it is taking a toll on you that is not immediately obvious. According to the CDC, it is associated with everything from unintentional injuries to neurological disorder and sexual dysfunction (!).

Yet today we see more and more people partaking in this dangerous habit, and it is more and more often accompanied with attempts to "undo" some of the more obvious effects. Got wasted last night? Run it off. Downed a two-six of Jameson's? Sounds like motivation for a heavy chest day.
And you know what? On the once in a very long while occasion, this might be a good way to get your blood moving around your body again. So if that's the case, why wouldn't it make sense that it can be used as an eraser of the effects of a partying lifestyle? Sure, you might not make any really impressive gains at the gym, but then again you also just might.
The same principle applies to food with more and more people. If you're going to go to the gym anyways, then you can skimp on a healthy lunch and down a Big Mac and some fries. Maybe you won't be undoing all of the damage, but you'll be a step ahead of if you weren't going to the gym, right?

Why It Will Bite You In The Ass

It really isn't my place to tell you that the binge drinking and partying lifestyle is wrong. Hell, going out and tying one on occasionally is generally good for your psychological state so long as you're smart about it. While I don't subscribe to it at all, we each have the choice to make for ourselves. I merely feel that it's important to consider the toll that you are taking on your body when it becomes a regular pastime. This is going to catch up to you at the gym, and be a strain your overall health.

I will now take the time to deliver some shocking news... Just because you ran 20km, or had an awesome workout lifting heavy, heavy weights doesn't mean that you can "reward" yourself with a pile of bread pudding or a night of drinking. If you want to treat yourself, go ahead, but don't fool yourself into thinking that the time you spend in the gym will balance out against the negative effects of putting unhealthy food groups inside of you. That which we add to ourselves as a result of training comes only after a lot of hard work. It can take weeks, even months before any truly noticeable changes take place. But that is not the same with food and drink. When we are not smart about our intake, it doesn't take long before it shows. A day of crunches doesn't outweigh a night of pizza and beer. Please now refer to the bold text above so I don't seem like so much of a jackass.

As far as using exercise to jump start your system after a night of getting wasted, well, that's a whole other story. There's a damned good chance that you're going to hurt yourself in the gym. One day your brain is going to be too busy holding your liver back from kicking your ass, and it's going to forget to tighten the collar that one time you go to bench 225.

And don't forget that alcohol, as a depressant, makes you depressed to some extent. In other words aside from the headache, the nausea, and the other headache (the one you woke up next to) it will make you not want to go to the gym, thereby causing you to waste however much money your membership is costing you, which benefits the Man. And we can NOT let that happen!

Finally, it can become a downward spiral into chemical stimulation; not necessarily anything illegal, either. But when you need coffee to keep you up, supplements for pre-gym energy, more coffee to get you
through work, and a drink or other depressant to wind down at the end of the day, you're suddenly caught in a cycle dubbed by a friend of mine who is currently in it as a "Counterbalance of Substance," that will eventually do you some damage, or at least force you to go on one of those god awful cleanses.

Consider...
...balance. Yes, go out and have a good time, but try and be smart about it. Try a night where you don't do any shots. Not one. Stick with your highballs (no, you can't drink them like shots to make up for all the shots you aren't doing) or beer, and maybe focus on being social instead of getting wasted. I'd be willing to bet that you enjoy your night more.

And here's another idea... Humour me... go for a month without drinking. Give it a try. During that month, make it in to the gym 5 days a week (or whatever your schedule permits). Even go as far as using a complex algorithm (or basic arithmetic, whatever works for you) to figure out how much you typically spend on going out, and put that money towards hiring a personal trainer for the month. After the month is over, step back and see how you feel. I'm willing to bet that overall you feel, well, better.

At the end of the day, you each have your reasons for wanting to be healthy and fit, and nothing can take them away from you. Nor should anything I write make you stop taking care of yourself because, "Oh My God, he's right! That's me!" I'm only asking you to look at that which motivates you, and see how it affects the person you are. After doing that, ask yourself something: Do you want it to consume your life, or compliment it?

Seven Things You Can Do to Improve Your Attractiveness to Women Today

,
Seven Things You Can Do to Improve Your Attractiveness to Women Today
Insane Muscle Girls :

Here at the High Status Male we like to kick around ideas that we hope can make us more attractive to women. Women are of course the great and universal Mystery... Their frivolous behaviors have vexed men throughout the Ages -- driving them to commit acts of war, suicide and even murder.

Seven Things You Can Do to Improve Your Attractiveness to Women Today

And that was when they weren't otherwise making us insanely lustful, or just plain insane!
A recurring idea in both my books is that men shouldn't have to obsess too much about their looks as much as their behavior around women, since THIS is what the girls grade us on in the same way that guys scope out their physical charms to decide who's hot or not. Yeah, we all know that we're supposed to act confident around women to project the vibe that we've made it far enough up the pecking order that women should take note. But what does this actually MEAN in terms of the types of behaviors and attitudes that we need to adopt for ourselves?

Here are 7 important signaling behaviors that you should learn how to manage. See if any of them need to be adjusted in your own personal male display:

1. Stop Pre-editing Away Your Every Possible Opening Words to a Woman. Or maybe I should say stop totally pre-REJECTING them because, man, that's what I used to do to myself big time! In normal everyday conversations I was fine and friendly and even funny -- but get me near some hot chick and it was clam-up time. I remember standing around helplessly in a club right next to a great looking girl wondering what I should "open" with (and this was before I understood what that even meant!...)

I would stand there locked in mental concrete, my mind racing through various different sentences thinking: "that's sucks... are you kidding me?!...if I say THAT it will make me sound like a complete loser!..." And then of course there was my personal favorite excuse: "...and so THEN what will you say to her?"

This last one was a real iron curtain for me -- I was essentially putting enormous pressure on myself to have some sort of well thought-out conversational script all memorized to a tee and ready to go in my head. In fact I never actually sat down and wrote out such a script for myself (a mistake), so in addition to having the perfect opening thing to say I was also required to create this script ON THE FLY!

You know how we like to talk about the idea of self-hatred? Well gentlemen, I present to you Exhibit A!

Notice how best to punish the "hated one"?... by setting the bar for an acceptable performance so high that it becomes impossible to achieve? This did the trick by seeding a big lump of fear in my mind that would cause me to lock up and never even make an attempt to speak up.

Remember, the High Status Male is King, Boss and Conqueror... he NEVER believes that his words are unimportant or boring (even if they are), and so he speaks freely! And YOU will listen. To be self-conscious about your words is a loud LSM (low status male) signal that the women will pick up on right away, so talk.

See how these deadly self-defeating cycles can come to control you?

2. Start Making Eye Contact With Women. And I mean the GOOD kind where you look away about 20% of the time so as not to slip into a 'psycho leer'. I talk about this extensively throughout my books and audios so I won't get into the whole thing here, but suffice to say that a shifty-eyed presentation of yourself is always a bad deal. People are made uncomfortable in the presence of someone who won't look them in the eye. They begin to wonder why you seem to be acting ashamed or guilty. What are you hiding? To varying degrees women will especially get creeped out by this A+ connection killer.

Poor eye contact creates a vibe that's just the opposite of charismatic -- which is the ability to make people feel good about themselves. Shifty eye contact is anti-charismatic because it forces people to identify with your discomfort instead, and they don't like that! They don't want to hang around with people who give them 'bad vibes' -- for whatever reason -- and would just as soon avoid you altogether.

So if you've ever scratched your head wondering why you're not getting many callbacks or why she won't answer your post-first-date-callback, this could be a big reason why. In your nervousness you revert to a turtled-up body language that included an evening-long inability to make eye contact with her, and she was totally put off by this loud signal of male subservience (or disinterest).

As a mechanical quick-fix, you can always practice the tried-and-true "salesman's trick" whereby you stare at the bridge of someone's nose if you can't stand to meet their eye. Most people cannot tell the difference. Ultimately though you should seek to raise your confidence around people, and your eye contact will then become more natural and genuine.

It's okay to use tricks such as these to kick-start your recovery, but you should always be working towards the day when you will no longer have to rely on such trickery to get you through a conversation.

3. Initiate a Handshake. We all know that a high status male is attractive to women, but what you may not realize is that your status is determined by your day-to-day interactions with other MEN.

Men constantly push, prod, connive, outwork or seek to outsmart their fellow man in the workplace, culture, battlefield, household or any of a thousand other venues in which they interact. There is always a competition going on to see who's just a bit more powerful than who. This game never ends, and much of it goes on subconsciously and almost invisibly. In many situations basic relationships are already clearly pre-established: Joe is the boss and Ron the employee, Jim the dad and mark the son, or Bill is the Sergeant and Ed the Private. Whatever... but it's clear cut.

However, many daily encounters between men who pretty much seem as if they could be on a same level are not as clearly defined, and so a signal is required to establish who is who. Who is the alpha and who agrees to be the subjugated?

This phenomenon can be played to your advantage if you are aware enough to make a point of establishing yourself as a man to be respected in any casual encounter. One of the simple ways that you can do this is to be the guy to offer to shake hands first (when appropriate of course, such as in a business situation or at a party). Why is this important? Because the higher status male conveys a sense of safety to a lower status male by touching him first -- but doing it the other way around can be viewed as a challenge.

Think again about the clearly pre-established relationship: the boss can reach out and put his arm around the employee to convey a message of "good job" or "you're in my favor". But reverse this and see what happens: an employee touching the boss unprompted would be seen as disrespectful and perhaps even a challenge to his authority. It says, "what are you going to do about it?"

So by expressing a desire to shake hands first it can seem as is you are seeking to touch the other guy from a position of strength. This can be very subtle and probably makes little more than a subliminal impact, but those are usually the best kind!

When you get into the habit of being 'touch aggressive' on a regular basis you will begin to establish a bit more respect for yourself. There will be some push-back from time to time as men continue to jockey against each other for just that shade more status than the other guy (I'm stronger, more intelligent, more courageous, wealthier, etc.). But at least now you're playing the game instead of being quickly dispatched off the board by guys who size-up your reluctance to "go first" as an automatic win for themselves.

4. Speak up. In the same vein as the previous point about handshakes your verbal thrust (or lack thereof) makes a statement about you as well. The loudest mouth in a group of men is often the alpha. In one-on-one conversations, alpha usually carries the conversation in some way -- from being the more informed or interesting party, to actually giving direct commands in some cases, while the "beta" shuts up and listens!

Another thing the beta male often does to cement his lower status is attempt to sanitize or otherwise try to frame what he's saying so as not to provoke alpha. For instance, in that employee-boss situation, the employee may try to break some bad news to the boss softly or in a hedged fashion so as to minimize his displeasure (and possible wrath!).

Whereas the boss simply states his mind with no regard as to how his words may make his subordinate "feel". (i.e., "You're fired Johnson!")

In neutral encounters where there is no pre-established pecking order, the one who ISN'T afraid to speak up first is usually given a higher status grade by most women who would casually observe such an encounter.

So even if it means stating the obvious, just do it. Because the actual content of what you're saying conveys less critical information than the silent signal delivered by just who is talking to whom. Get it?

Again, subliminal. But that's why they call it making an impression. And these impressions will stack-up in your favor with repeated expression.

5. Drop Dead and Smile. Now we're back to your interactions with women. Nervousness and fidgety jumpiness conveys a signal of having little personal confidence. Also when we're nervous we rarely smile but instead wear a mask of concern that can look angry. This generally doesn't make a great first impression on women, unless you know how to pull off the strong, brooding, silent type of vibe (although if you could I doubt you would be reading this now!)

A better way to go is to smile and make great eye contact and generally just MODEL the sort of reaction that you want reflected back at you. Again, imagine the man of considerable status and power: master of his universe, he is calm and collected as he moves through life. No nervous fidgeting that might reveal an underlying insecurity about... what? His social skills, his bank account, his fading virility? Ha!... not a chance!

And yet that's what YOUR nervousness can convey about you if you're not careful.

Still nervous anyway? It's okay so long as it doesn't show itself too much visibly. Again, you can use this little mechanical trick to help yourself out: just hold a thumb pinched between your two fingers on the same hand and squeeze as tightly as you have to. This gives your nervous system a focal point in the body to quietly discharge itself -- allowing the rest of your muscles to relax and stop quivering. To "drop dead".

This allows you to project a vibe of calmness that makes that awesome subliminal High Status impression on women which can go very far towards getting you some return interest from them!

6. Become Comfortable With Silence. This is just the opposite of Point #1... i.e., overthinking everything that you want to say, rejecting it all and then saying nothing at all!

Some guys can't tolerate any lull in a conversation with a girl and will seek to keep up a constant stream of nervous chatter because, well, they're nervous. But just consider for a moment a romantic scene from a typical movie: isn't it during those moments of silence when the words run out that all the truly important communication begins... spoken with long, penetrating looks and perhaps the first stages of physical contact?

These pivotal moments of emotional / romantic connection will never occur however if you continue to prattle over every potential close moment like Woody Allen on speed! This blab serves no purpose other than to keep your own anxieties at bay, so stop it!

Remember, one of the principle skills of the seducer is to seize upon moments of conversational lull and use them to move beyond words... to begin guiding a woman towards an eventual physical connection. This is a skill you want to work on for yourself beginning today. So the next time you find yourself blabbing away to cover up an uncomfortable silence, try sending her a silent signal of appreciation with your eyes instead.

Remember, YOU may be uncomfortable with silence, but women are drawn into it. Learn to exploit this phenomenon.

7. Change Something About Yourself to Improve Your Edge and Get Noticed. LSM's tend to become socially invisible after a while and will silently fade away into the background. You need to do something different to start lighting-up on her radar screen!

No need to undergo any sort of colossal surgical makeover either -- improving just ONE small but significant thing about yourself can be enough to break everyone's old, cemented image of you and force them to begin reconsidering who you are. Grow your hair long, or shave it off. Get a tat (or a new one that's cooler). Try showing up in nice khaki's instead of the usual dirty jeans -- or if you're a button-down suit-and-tie guy then try loosening up your look a little. This kind of thing acts as a shock to the system (both to the people around you AND to yourself) and might finally start getting you noticed, maybe for the first time ever! Simple but effective.

Well there's 7 ideas to get you started down the path to some potentially exciting personal change. Notice what I didn't tell you to do though... I didn't tell you to go out and get an expensive new wardrobe or to get rich somehow and buy yourself a flashy new car and some kickin' bling. The typical things you might think would be necessary to raise a guys' status so that women begin noticing him. These can be your long range goals to change and improve your life, but you must crawl before you can walk and it's easy to become overwhelmed and discouraged if you try to tackle the task of massive personal change head-on from several directions at once. Most of us probably wouldn't even know where to begin!

So your first step will be to assume some of the behaviors of the HSM (even is simulation) and use the improved reactions from women as a basis to build your confidence up, and then just continue moving forward from there. Remember, the goal is to raise the appearance of your male status for the purpose of getting your foot in the door romantically... getting a momentary flash of interest from a chick that you can then seize upon and begin to build off of. One step at a time, right?

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: This non-verbal signal of male attractiveness sets the table in such a way to make it possible for you to avoid being rejected as much as possible. Otherwise you are constantly trying to fly in the face of a hurricane of female disinterest, and it won't be long before your fledgling confidence is shattered completely. You must avoid this.

None of these seven things require any huge investment of money either. What they mostly require is an awareness of yourself -- how you act around others and the effect that it has on them. By adopting this sort of "fake it before you make it" idea of self-improvement you can begin to bootstrap yourself up out of your current behavioral rut and start to create little social breakthroughs for yourself here and there. These successes are crucial though because they provide bits of inspiration to keep you motivated and moving forward, always improving... getting smarter with each failure and more confident with each success!

Before you know it, you'll be looking back 1, 2 or ten years later only to realize that the entire trajectory of your life has changed enormously for the better as a result of these simple beginning efforts.

How to Tame a Pregnant Woman

,
How to Tame a Pregnant Woman
Insane Muscle Girls :

As far back as I can remember I have dreamt about having children. More specifically, I dreamed of being pregnant. While other little girls fantasized about their wedding dress and their prince charming, I waddled around the house with a pillow in my shirt saying, "My water broke, call 911!" There was something so charming to me about a pregnant woman. Something so peaceful and maternal, I always wanted to touch their bellies and pretend the baby kicked back in response to my hand. I could not wait to have the experience all for myself.

How to Tame a Pregnant Woman

I was 22 when my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby. We had only been married for 5 months, but knew from the start that we didn't want to wait long before starting our family. I had always wanted to be a young mom. When I saw that plus sign on the pregnancy test everything in me leapt for joy. Finally, I would have a pregnancy of my own; a belly of my own; a baby of my own. My first pregnancy was a breeze. Mild morning sickness was all I really had to complain about. I loved my huge belly, I loved the clothes, the preparation, even loved my prenatal visits to the doctor. Excitement was in the air. I was scheduled to be induced at 5 am on July 25, 2008. Around 2 am that morning the labor pains started on their own; this was it. 19 hours later, my husband and I, along with a whole slew of friends and relatives crowded outside the labor and delivery room, welcomed Staley Shane Weatherford into the world. He was absolute perfection, and I couldn't wait to get started on baby #2.

When the first pregnancy went so smoothly, it was impossible to think of the second being any different. Sure, I would get bigger sooner, I would have the added work of caring for an infant while growing an infant, but women had done it for hundreds of years, and I was rearing to go! So it came as no surprise when 3 months after Staley was born we had another positive pregnancy test. All the same emotions flooded over me when I found out I was pregnant again. I couldn't wait to wear my maternity clothes again, I couldn't wait to find out if it would be another boy or a girl, and cute baby names consumed my every waking thought. It wasn't long before my naivety came face to face with my reality.

First, every pregnancy is different. Not tiny insignificant differences either. In my case, with each pregnancy the symptoms intensified. Mild morning sickness became unbearable nausea and daily vomiting. An annoying headache was now the equivalent of a tiny little being hammering away inside my skull. Blood pressure got higher, my face and feet got fatter, and my hormones got further and further away from normal.

It was somewhere in the 3rd trimester of my second pregnancy that I realized exactly what it was that I had become; insane. In truth, there is very little difference between a pregnant woman and a wild animal. Both creatures will love you as long as you have food in your hand, and both will consider your hand food when it's all that's left extended. Both have an excellent sense of smell and will hunt down and find even the tiniest morsel of chocolate within a 5 mile radius. And perhaps the most significant similarity for this discussion, both strike fear in the hearts of their mates through the entirety of their pregnancies.

At this point in my life I feel that my understanding of pregnancy and what it does to a woman, physically and emotionally, is as sharp as it will ever be. However, I cannot imagine what the experience is really like for the man involved. I cannot fathom riding the roller coaster of hormones, cravings, and anxiety with the woman you love but think should be institutionalized. And so, I am writing this to all of our patient, loving, and absolutely terrified fathers. I have compiled 8 steps to taming a pregnant woman. (Disclaimer: this only applies to pregnant females of the human variety).

Step 1: Be considerate.
Pregnancy takes quite a toll on a woman's body. If you are one of those men who think this is exaggerated, I recommend swallowing a watermelon whole and letting it pass through your system. Let me know how that turns out for you! It takes 9 months for the baby to develop and be ready to greet the world, but also for the momma to be ready. Most mornings she will wake up feeling like she didn't sleep at all. She'll feel like she's constantly whining about how horrible she feels, when really her complaints don't even scratch the surface of how bad it is. She feels crazy and she feels overwhelmed, and she needs to know that you understand. Sure you'll never be able to empathize, but you don't take lightly the sacrifices she's making for your family. It doesn't go without saying; she needs to hear it.

Step 2: Keep her fed.
Perhaps the most notorious symptom of pregnancy is the unceasing need for food. Sometimes normal human food, and sometimes crazy unexplainable cravings. I cannot describe to you how strong these cravings are. The triggers are many and they are often not preventable. A fast food commercial can send her into a frenzy. A memory of eating candy at Halloween as a child can literally make her salivate in anticipation. When she wants it, you should try your best to deliver it! If gone unsatisfied that craving will fester, eventually leading to a binge episode. Take it from me, it's best to catch it before it is allowed to grow and mature into something worse than the need for a Snickers bar.

Step 3: Don't be afraid to intervene.
Oh the things people say to pregnant women! It never ceases to amaze me how negative strangers can be. When I was noticeably pregnant with my second son and would be shopping at Wal-Mart with my first son in the basket, people would constantly stop me just so that they could tell me, "You're going to have your hands full!" With a shopping cart full of Huggies and a body full of raging hormones, it was so difficult to be polite. My usual response was, "Better full than empty", although I was thinking, "Really? I hadn't thought of that, maybe I should rethink this!" Another favorite is, "Don't you know what causes that?" How I would have loved to say, "Yep, and we must be doing it right to be this productive!" I was always thankful when my husband would jump in and respond so that I didn't have to be tacky. We don't enjoy being rude or short with people, so an intervention by you will always be appreciated, if not right away, eventually.

Step 4: Don't let her scare you off.
In every marriage, there are ups and there are downs. You may find that during pregnancy your downs are suddenly lower than you think you can climb out of. One of the most frustrating things about being pregnant is how out of control your emotions become. Any disagreement with my husband would open up the floodgates. I couldn't explain what was wrong, because I didn't know. The simplest things made me cry uncontrollably. If I wasn't wallowing in tears and sorrow, I was the biggest, scariest defensive tackle you've ever encountered. "What's wrong," would send me into defense mode and I would verbally attack my unsuspecting husband. It would be completely understandable for you, as the husband, to throw your arms up in defeat rather than pursue a disagreement. Don't let her scare you off. She wants to work it out, she's just out of control. Be persistent, be patient, and reassure her that you love her regardless of your dispute. Sometimes having her write what she's feeling is a better method of communicating. When we can't speak because we're slinging snot everywhere, pen and paper are a better medium for expressing our thoughts.

Step 5: Pamper, Pamper, Pamper.
Never underestimate the power of lotions and massages. A pregnant woman is never without an aching muscle, and being pampered when you're in such a frustrating condition is always a welcomed gesture. Don't ask her, "Can I give you a foot rub," just get some lotion and rub those smelly, achy feet. Run her a bath, let her sleep late in the morning when you know she really needs it, or bring her flowers for absolutely no reason other than that you love her and appreciate her. Make her feel like a princess.

Step 6: Show your excitement!
I realize that decorating a nursery and registering for gifts for your baby shower aren't high up on a man's to-do list, but they are on hers. While you're thinking, "Do we really need a special trash can to dispose of diapers in", your pregnant wife is researching and critiquing the dozens of different styles of diaper pales thinking, "I want nothing but the best for my baby's poop!" Even when you don't see the point, let her see that you're excited. Make an effort to do the things that aren't that big of a deal to you. Help her pick out the baby bedding, go with her to birthing classes, and show her that this is just as significant to you as it is to her. You will fall in love with one another all over again as you start to see each not only as spouse, but as the mother/father of your baby, and that's pretty exciting!

Step 7: Never compare her to a wild animal.
At the forefront of my mind there is always the lingering fear that I am slipping further and further away from sanity. More often than not I feel like this thought is in the same spot in my husband's mind. I am eternally thankful that it has never made its way to his lips. Hormone fluctuations seriously make you feel crazed, which is a very depressing thought for a pregnant woman. Looking yourself in the mirror and realizing that the normal girl that used to live here is gone, and in her place is a demonic alter ego, is a pretty scary thought. As hard as it might be to keep the, "Are you insane," comments to yourself, it could very well save your life, and your marriage. Yes, she is a little insane, but it is only temporary. At some point over the next 18 years the loving, level-headed woman you fell madly in love with will return, and I don't think it's too much to ask for you to suck it up until then.

Step 8: Never give up.
This is one of the most difficult phases your marriage will ever go through. A pregnant woman feels like she is literally being pulled in a million different directions. How can she be a mother to her existing children, as well as a wife to her husband, while she feels like everything she has is being used up by the tiny little life growing in her belly. She cannot give 100% to everything, so now more than ever it is your job to pick up the slack and help her out. Keep in mind that it's only temporary, and that you're not alone. She's struggling through it as well, and as long as you are both committed to each other you will live to see the end result. Hang in there and be encouraged; men having been doing this for hundreds of years.

The Winged Spirit Chapter 1

,
The Winged Spirit Chapter 1
Insane Muscle Girls :

Paris May was not an ordinary teenage girl. She was the envy of most, if not every, girl in her school. At the age of sixteen, she's a model for her mother's thriving clothing industry. She wasn't skinny like the other models who reminded her of starving children all over the world, but instead, she was slim, a little less than average weight. She wasn't tall like the others either who were either five feet ten inches or six feet tall. She stood a sturdy five foot four, which isn't tall at all for a model. In fact, she was one of the shortest girls out of all the juniors and seniors at Adana High School. But her height and weight have little to do with her modelling career.

The Winged Spirit Chapter 1

Usually, when someone looked at her, they appreciated her physical form thoroughly, from head to toe. She had silky dark brown hair that waved on its own and highlighted itself during the summer, and her bangs swept to the right over the flawless skin of her forehead. It was lightly layered and the longest part was on her back, which reaches the small of her back. Her nose was petite and straight. She had soft lips that were full. The upper lip slightly indented the lower one and gave her a look of unintentional sensuality. Her eyes were large, almond-shaped and heavily lashed. They were the deepest of violets superior to the iris and they got lighter towards the pupil. They were also flecked with silver. Paris had soft, pampered skin the color of white gold, and it always glowed, no matter what time of year it was. Everybody knew that the seasons could do nothing to interfere with it, because she was born with that coloring. Even if she was a little slim, it did nothing to draw the attention away from her curves. One thing was for sure, she was gifted in that department.

Her appearance was only half of who she really was. No, it was less than half, because she never truly paid attention to her physical being much. It was always her mother who took care of that. Paris was the president of a charity fundraiser that runs all year long at her school. She raised almost ten thousand dollars annually and all but fifteen percent of it went to the poor. The rest went to the school for books and repairs. She wasn't your usual shallow drama queen. If she ever saw that someone needed help, she would rush to it, even if it was beyond her experience, and do as much as possible for them. She was caring. That aspect of her had all the girls liking her as well, but their attitudes towards her were laced with feminine rivalry. For that reason, she had no close friends. She never let it get to her. She didn't mind, because her mother was her best friend, and if she had her, she didn't need anybody else. Normally, she's a quiet kind of girl. But when you got her started about something she truly believed in and felt strongly about, she oozed charisma from every pore of her body.

Just by looking at her, most people just assumed that she was the most popular girl in school. This is true. They assumed that she was also a model student and got straight A's. This is also true. They assumed that she was possibly the only human girl with a perfect life. This is false. She was one of the three Winged Spirits alive with a perfect life. But they didn't know that. She didn't know that. At least, she wouldn't know until it was her birthday, and when she found out, they way she reacted would determine whether she would live, or die...

At that moment though, she was not thinking about life or death. She was thinking about her chipped nail.

"Oh, Paris. Look at what you've done!" Her mother, Bethany May, a short, plump woman with an impish look in her brown eyes grabbed her hand and observed the nails on Paris' fingers with dismay. "Oh, I told you to be just a little more careful! It'll take forever to get another appointment at that beauty salon and I just don't have the time." A frown creased her arched brows and she clicked her tongue.

"Mom, I can pay for another one, don't worry about it." Even considering the circumstances, Paris felt a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. Bethany May would not worry if she heard that the apocalypse was tomorrow on the radio but a hair out of place is enough to drive her insane. At the age of forty-two, she was more successful that most women or men her age and older. Because of her job, she always took care of her appearance, which meant that she took care of Paris' appearance as well. Bethany had short, red, curly hair that barely touched her shoulders in comparison to Paris' long waves. Because of that hair, she could spot her mother a mile away. Well, almost. Her mother wore designer clothing and shoes every chance she got, which is every day, and booked appointments at the salon, spa and cosmetics specialists every month or so. She was a woman of high maintenance but she was as soft as a stuffed animal on the inside. Nobody but Paris got to see that side of her. Everyone else, her friends, Bethany's employees, Paris' teachers, etc only got to see the cool, professional side of her.

They were both sitting in Paris' couch. Her room was different. She liked it for many reasons but one of the main reasons is because it reminded her of herself. The room itself was a large rectangle and had a high ceiling. There was a bed with a canopy and millions of pillows stacked on the plush sheets of all different sizes and shapes. There was a desk with a glossy laptop on top. Beside the desk, there was a chair on four wheels. There was her closet with its double doors that slid open and revealed at least hundreds of hangars all occupied with clothing cramped together. Then there was the couch that they were sitting on, a little faded out on the seats from good use. Everything about her room was pink. All of it was the same shade too. The one thing that wasn't was the floor which was made of a glossy wood panelling.
Her mother looked up and the frown disappeared. She abruptly removed her hand from Paris' and gave a tinkling of laughter. "Sweetheart, money's not the issue here." Then her smile became a look of concern.

"Did you forget that the shoot is tomorrow?"

Paris felt her eyes widen involuntarily. "Oh, my goodness! I completely forgot! How stupid of me!" She smacked the palm of her hand on her forehead. Tomorrow was the day her mother's co-workers were supposed to doll her up in tons of accessories and take photos for the season's newest designs. Even though the shots are supposed to be taken from far, which meant they were taking shots of her whole body, a single chipped nail could cause the critics and judges to lessen the ratings of the company in a millisecond. She couldn't see that happen for her own stupid mistake.

She stared at the five nails on her right hand. She had gotten a French manicure and French pedicure at the salon yesterday. All the nails were long. All of them but the one on her ring finger which had a chip right in the middle. She frowned at it and let out a flustered breath.

Her mother patted her arm and smiled a smile that brought out the crinkled in the corners of her eyes. "You know what? I think I can file them out for you. Don't you worry, baby girl." Paris raised an eyebrow.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I wasn't the first one to flip out when I chipped a nail. It was you." She shot her a smug smile.
Her mother raised both her eyebrows. "Yes, well, at least..." Paris could tell she was browsing her mind for a cute comeback. "Never mind." They both burst out laughing. When the laughter died down, Bethany looked down at her watch.

"Shouldn't you be getting for school?"

"Mooooooooom...." Paris started. "I don't feel like getting out of my pyjamas."

"Well, you have to go to school. Come on, get up." Even as she was saying it, Bethany stood from the couch and held out a hand to her daughter.

"I don't even want to go, mom. Oh, c'mon. Don't make me go." Paris pouted and she hoped it looked sincere enough.

Bethany tried glaring at her daughter but her twitching mouth gave away the smile she was trying to hold back. "No, you most definitely cannot stay at home today. You have a test in biology and I don't want you to miss it." She drew back her hand walked to Paris' closet, pulled open the door and started rummaging through the clothing.

"But mom, I hate my bio teacher! To add on to that, he's a pervert! All the girls think so." Even she could hear the desperation creeping into her voice.

"Paris, hate is a strong word." She pulled out a pair of grey, Bermuda shorts and placed it on the arm of the couch.

"Okay, fine then. I strongly dislike him." Without realizing it, Paris got up, took off her pyjama bottoms and slipped on the shorts.
As if her mother hadn't heard her, she continued speaking. "And he's a married man, angel. He's hardly in the position to be perverted. He has three children whom he loves!" She pulled out a cream-colored v-neck tee and handed it to Paris.

As she was pulling the top over her head, she muttered under her breath, "Maybe a little too much."

"I heard that." Bethany made her way towards Paris holding a golden, chain-linked belt in her left hand. While she tucked the shirt into the shorts, she placed the belt around the slots. When she closed it, she took a step back and stood there, assessing Paris. "I think the grey Chanel flats would go really well with that, don't you?" She looked at Paris' feet. "Or maybe, just a pair of those flip-flops I bought for you from Vegas."

"Yeah, okay, great mom. I still don't want to go to school." She looked at her mother pleadingly. She pouted her lips for maximum effect.

Bethany's face softened for the smallest second but she snapped out of it almost right away. "Oh, you... Don't you dare think that you can fool me. Now, come on. I'll drop you off before going to work. I'll give you some money for lunch but I'll get something for breakfast while you get your books. Hurry! We don't want to be tardy." With that, Bethany flitted down the stairs. Paris sighed with a smile on her face and gathered her books together into her alligator skin side tote.

She walked down the circular staircase and entered the large kitchen. Observing her surroundings, she searched for her mother. Most of the kitchen's perimeter was covered with counters which were layered with glass. There was a medium-sized island in the middle which was topped with coral blue tiles. Not one dish was out of place and the floors were sparkling thanks to Mr. Clean. Bethany May ran a tight ship. Her mother wasn't in the kitchen. Paris frowned but when to the entrance. She slipped her feet into a pair of silver flip flops and opened the door. As soon as she put her foot through the threshold, a golden Mercedes honked from the driveway. The passenger's side window opened and Bethany called out to Paris from inside. "Can you walk any slower?"

Paris jogged to the car, her feet slapping the pavement every step of the way. "Sorry, I was looking for you in the kitchen." She opened the door and climbed in, closing the door behind her with a thud. Her mom put the car in gear and pulled out of the drive, then zoomed down the street, barely making a yellow light. "Mom! Slow down!"

"Why do you want me to slow down? This is already too slow if we want to get you to school on time." Paris could see her mother's eyes on the road ahead of her and knew that she was serious.
"We don't want to get me to school on time. You want to get me to school on time." Paris pressed the button on the door and the window closed.

"Here you go." Without looking, Bethany reached into the compartment in front of Paris and pulled out two granola bars and placed them on Paris' legs. "Eat this."

"Mother, are you trying to kill me?"

"What makes you say that?" Her hand was back on the steering wheel and she swerved right.

"Other than your driving, you're giving me these to eat?" Paris picked one up as if it was a dead rodent instead of a cereal bar.

Bethany caught the grimace on her daughter's face and chuckled to herself. "I put them in here when I came into the car just now. Don't worry, they're not expired."

Paris narrowed her eyes. "Then why didn't you put them on the seat?"

"And risk you sitting on them? Sweetheart, I don't think you'd appreciate a butt-squished bar. Now eat before I throw them out the window."

Shaking her head slightly, Paris opened the pink packaging. It was the type of bar with a thick layer of yogurt stuck to the bottom of bran flakes. Sighing for the second time, she bit into it, while her mother made their way to Adana High School.

Paris was only in her first period class and she already felt like putting her head on the wide desk and taking a nap. Mr. Pierce might have a PhD in English Language Arts, but he certainly has no education in entertainment. She didn't expect all her teachers to be fun, and friendly like her art teacher, Ms. Britta, but the least she expected is for the teacher to not speak in a monotone voice, which is exactly what Mr. Pierce does every day.

Paris glanced around the purple painted room. She sat exactly in the center of all the desks. Most desks had two students sitting at them, but Paris sat alone. The girl who used to sit beside her moved out of town, and since everyone had to sit in alphabetical order, she would stay alone for the rest of the year, not that she minded. She liked the feeling of knowing no one was looking at her paper when she wrote something. She wasn't exactly talented in that area of school. She did admire poetry though.

There was a tall, well-muscled boy sitting diagonally from her. He had sandy brown hair, bronzed skin and eyes the color of the sea. His name was Kevin, and he was one of the guys who supposedly had a crush on her. He turned his head in her direction and when he caught her eyes, he smiled and winked while mouthing, "Hey". She smiled back at him, but turned to face the teacher. Kevin was gorgeous, and she knew at least three girls who were dying to just talk to him. While Paris may admire his physical form and beauty, she had no intention of getting involved. She didn't trust men when it came to that. She would never trust them after what her mother had told her about her father. Her real father. Bethany had had many boyfriends, but none of them had lasted as long as Paris' biological father...

While Paris wrote an essay in class about Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Bethany drove herself back home. She had told Paris that she had to go to work, but she had lied. She'd taken a day off so she could start re-assorting the house. After all, Paris was going to turn seventeen in a few weeks, and she didn't have much time left. Thinking about her daughter, Bethany's eyes swam in tears. Oh, my poor, poor baby girl. My girl, I'm so sorry... Bethany knew it was no use crying, because her tears couldn't save Paris' fate. It couldn't change the fact that Paris was going to have to take responsibilities that no one but two other people in the whole world would have to take.

She thought about how she had told Paris about how her father had turned away from them and escaped the duties a husband and father was supposed to acknowledge. She had told her that her father had been nice, and caring, but not mature enough to take care of them. It was all lies, but she needed a story to tell her. She couldn't tell her the truth; she had to push it away as long as possible. She had decided that, years ago, when she learned the truth, she wouldn't tell her until it was crucial, and it became a matter of life or death. Well, she could no longer procrastinate.

Wiping away the tears with the back of her hand and giving an involuntary sniff, she pulled into the rocky driveway. As she shut the door of the house behind her, Bethany ran up the stairs and went into her bedroom.

It was a comfortable room, decorated in warm shades of gold and maroon. She walked to the closet and took a shuddering breath, then stepped inside. It was pitch black in there, and she moved her hand around the wall. When she found it, she pressed the light switch, and a single light bulb illuminated the space with yellow light. At the far end, there was a rod covered with hangars holding tons of clothing. She pushed the clothing to one side with effort and looked down at the black safe. She had hidden it there, because there was no way Paris would even think about looking there. Her breathing became shallower and she could feel a horrible shiver run up and down her spine. She looked down at her arms and saw gooseflesh.

The headaches had been getting worse. Paris had even noticed that Bethany seemed to be more tired nowadays. Usually, she was filled with happiness. Her body ran on energy. The visions in her sleep had sucked all that away like a vacuum. Last night, she had seen the worst one so far. She knew it was going to get worse, until Paris' birthday, but it still terrified her.

She had been running on a dark and damp street with no light. Just a flickering street lamp illuminated her way. Her feet had been bare, and the sharp rocks had given the soles of her feet gashes and cuts. But she didn't dare stop running. If she did, it would catch her, and she wouldn't wake up from her slumber. While she was running, she could feel her heart pounding in her chest and head in a hammering manner. She could feel the sweat wetting her hair and skin. Then, she heard the voice.

It wasn't like any other voice she heard before. It was inhuman, and it immediately struck shock, terror and fear into her heart. It wasn't the kind of fear you get from watching horror movies, it's the kind of fear you don't get after childhood. It's ghost fear. And when you feel it, you know that every hair on your body will rise up with gooseflesh.

The thing said in a whisper, "Bethany, you can't run anymore. I'm going to catch you, and then I'm going to catch her, just like I caught him. Two weeks is not a lot of time, you know." Bethany had felt the tears racing down her face savagely, but she could not say anything. Then, she had awoken with a start. She was crying, and shaking convulsively, and her skin was pale and clammy. She had wept silently throughout the night, afraid to go back to sleep. She knew right away, that she had to tell Paris. When dawn made its way through the night, she forgot about telling her. And when Paris had gotten out of the car in front of the school, she knew it wasn't the right time, yet, in the very core of her heart, she knew she was just afraid of saying anything, of ruining the innocent girl's life forever.

Well, she's just going to have to accept it, isn't she? A male voice inside her head said. Not unless I can help her. Bethany replied to it. You can't help her. It's her destiny and hers alone. You will do nothing to interfere, just prepare her. And prepare her well. There was no doubting the tone of finality in that voice.

Bethany inhaled a sharp breath. That voice had been in her head for a long time, she couldn't even put her finger on the day that she started hearing it in her head. It was Aegeus' voice. It was Paris' father's voice... Every time she heard it, she cried. Even if she didn't want it, tears always shed and painful, wracking sobs are wrenched from her throat. She didn't know why he was haunting her this way. She didn't know why he wouldn't leave her alone. The truth is, she did want him by her side, but she didn't want his voice, she wanted his physical form. His voice just would not satisfy her. She needed more, a supporting arm around her, a shoulder to cry on. She hadn't specified that when he had had that last conversation with her. How could she, when there were so many more important things to talk about?

The Unmaking Of An Athlete

,
The Unmaking Of An Athlete
Insane Muscle Girls :

I sometimes wonder if there are any prerequisites at all to getting a job as a college strength and conditioning coach. As the owner of my private athletic training company I have had the opportunity to work with athletes from numerous colleges and universities across the country and have witnessed their disgust with their schools strength and conditioning programs. Some athletes, such as those attending Arizona State, are fortunate enough to have outstanding strength coaches and tremendous programs that they need not look elsewhere for help. Others are not so lucky. Every August I try to send my athletes back to their respective schools as one of the strongest, fastest, and most well conditioned players on their team. Come December I see the unlucky one's come back to me weaker, smaller and slower. These athletes have the misfortune of training under some Neanderthal strength coach who hasn't learned anything new about weight training since the release of Pumping Iron. There have been countless advances in the field of strength and conditioning over the last ten years, yet very few people seem to take advantage of them. It is inexcusable that in 2004, a college strength and conditioning coach does not have a thorough knowledge of exercise and nutrition and can not properly prepare their teams for competition. If your athletes are losing size and strength, slowing down, and becoming more injury prone I think it's time to go back to the drawing board.

The Unmaking Of An Athlete

Every college athlete that hires me as their strength coach brings me their schools workout to look at before we get started. Some of the things I see in those programs are absolutely unfathomable.

One such example of the insanity is the baseball player I train whose school conditioning program includes running three miles through the city of Philadelphia ala Rocky Balboa every morning at 6am before lifting. Long distance running is useless for nearly every sport, especially baseball. Baseball players will normally run no more than 90 feet at any one particular time. That 90 foot sprint usually comes only once every half hour or so and only if the player gets a hit. So how, I ask, does running three miles each morning improve your ability to play the game of baseball? The only player on the field who needs real endurance is the pitcher. A well known strength coach once told me that if a baseball player can play PlayStation in the locker room, without getting winded, he is aerobically fit enough for the game. Baseball is a game of skill and hand-eye coordination and the players need size, strength and speed. The major leagues are filled with pumped up monsters that hit 500 foot home runs and can bench press a car, yet many college coaches continue to run their players into the ground. Endless distance running will only cause the athletes to lose size, strength and most importantly...games. To get a few more wins this season, ditch the counterproductive marathon training and get your baseball players doing sprints and lifting heavy weights.

Another one of my athletes is a Division 1 field hockey player whose conditioning test on the first day of camp consists of running from New York to Los Angeles and back in under an hour. I am, of course, exaggerating but not by much. The test involves more running in one morning than the girls will run in a seasons worth of games. Field hockey players must be highly conditioned, no doubt, but the best way to achieve that high level of conditioning is not through an outdated approach of long distance running. Coaches who implement this kind of training are preparing their athletes for a marathon, not a stop and go sport such as field hockey. While the athlete's may be able to run a faster time in the mile, the question is, how does that equate to better performance on the field? The answer is obvious, it doesn't. There is no sport that consists of running miles at a time. Most sports involve a combination of sprinting, jogging and even walking. Field hockey is no different and as such, these athletes would be best served to do a mix of interval sprint training and longer 200-400 meter sprints. A colleague of mine who works with several NHL players, arguably the most highly conditioned of all athletes, has found that 400 meter sprints performed three times weekly works wonders for conditioning while avoiding muscle and strength losses.

I once trained a football player whose team workout consisted of no work for the lower back or hamstrings, the most important muscles for sprint speed. I have another athlete whose school training program is 100% machine based. One of my standout football players, who I began training in eighth grade lost nearly forty pounds in his first year at college because the team workout consisted of full body circuit training of 15-20 reps with 30 seconds rest, three days a week, year round! There must have been some strong guys in that lineup. Another amazing training program was the one that had EVERY kid on the team do the exact same weight regardless of bodyweight, strength level or position! The reasoning behind it was they had 50 kids to train and didn't have time to change the weights.

To those with a good deal of strength training knowledge the above stories may sound like fiction. But trust me they are all true, you can't make that kind of stuff up. Unfortunately, I have dozens more and could go on forever with similar stories. There are endless mistakes made by strength coaches and head coaches on a daily basis but here are some of the biggest ones and some ways to improve upon them:

1) Excessive endurance training- Nearly every athlete I work with gets run into the ground on a daily basis. This is counterproductive and is usually done because the coaches don't have the necessary understanding of the body's different energy systems and how to train them properly. Most sports require speed. Speed can only be improved through proper training of the nervous system and by avoiding excessive endurance work. Too much distance work can convert fast twitch muscle fibers into slow twitch fibers and can actually decrease an athlete's speed over time. Unfortunately I've seen this happen more times than I care to remember and have watched great athletes have their careers ruined by improper training techniques. If coaches kept in mind the requirements of the sport they are preparing their athletes for, maybe this would not be such a problem. For example, in training an offensive lineman, why would you ever have him run miles at a time or sprint more than ten to twenty yards in practice when you know that he will never run that distance in a game? Unless I am missing something, the point of practice is to get ready for what you will do in a game. The problem, much of the time lies in the fact that head coaches dictate how their team's running is implemented. Most of the time a head coach does not have a degree in anatomy or physiology or even a general understanding of either. The head coach is required to know the sport inside and out but is rarely an expert in energy system training. If head coaches could check their egos and let a qualified speed and conditioning coach handle this aspect of training they just might add a few more victories to their record.

2) Overtraining- Most coaches have an old school military attitude of "more is better," and usually end up overtraining their athletes. Spending more than an hour in the weight room is a classic mistake. Performing extra sprints at the end of practice as a form or punishment is another one. By forcing the athletes to run in such a fatigued state, you increase their risk of injury and teach them to adopt improper sprint technique. This combined with three-a-day practices, limited rest times, insufficient nutrition and hydration all leads to a severe state of overtraining.

3) Improper sprint training- Anyone who understands how the body works knows that to improve speed you must target the central nervous system (CNS). Proper neural training requires the appropriate amount of recovery time between sprints. The CNS takes five to six times longer than the muscles to recover, a fact which seem to escape most coaches. Running ten forty yard sprints with a fifteen second rest is not speed training, it is time wasting and nauseating. The frequency of high intensity speed training is also too great. Most athletes are forced to perform maximal sprints every day of the week. The great Olympic sprint coach, Charlie Francis, has his athletes perform no more than two max effort sprint days per week and finds anything more than that to be detrimental in speed development.

4) Too many reps in the weight room- Most of the college weight training programs I see focus on sets of 10-15 reps, even for Olympic lifts. Any strength coach who has yet to learn that Olympic lifts are never to be performed for more than six reps should not be working at the college level. Where is the strength work in these programs? With all of the other endurance work the kids are doing the last thing you want to do is turn the time in the weight room into another endurance session. Focus on strength and speed which is best accomplished by using multiple sets of 1-6 reps and heavy weight.

5) Using the wrong exercises- Tricep kickbacks, leg extensions, and pec deck flyes are all exercises that I have actually seen in the programs of Division 1 schools. These exercises are completely useless for any athlete. Strength is built using basic compound movements and heavy weight. Focus on .
Another mistake is taking kids who have little to no training experience and having them do power cleans or some other complex lift. By the time most male athletes reach college they have done a decent amount of weight training but that is not usually the case for females. I have heard of schools taking freshman girls and throwing them right into a workout consisting of snatches and split jerks. Just because a girl may be superstar Division 1 athlete does not mean she is ready to start doing Olympic complexes. Beginners should always train like beginners regardless of the situation.

6) Improper exercise form- Even if you utilize the proper rep scheme, and train heavy on the compound exercises listed above it is all a waste if your exercise form is horrendous. In the college weight rooms I've been in, I've seen people bench press with their asses a foot and a half off the bench and have seen more varieties of a hang clean than I ever knew existed. As a strength coach it is your job, above all else, to at least be able to teach your athletes proper exercise form and help them avoid injury.

7) Doing conditioning work before weight training- The point of lifting weights is to get stronger. To do so you should be as fresh as possible upon entering the weight room so you can train at your maximal capacity. Running and doing conditioning drills immediately before lifting drains your glycogen stores and saps your energy, leaving you weak and unmotivated, not exactly the way you want to feel before a heavy workout. Completing an exhausting two hour practice and then going straight to the weight room for some heavy squats is also a great way to get injured.

8) Training the whole team with the same workout- You would be amazed at how many schools use the exact same workout for every player on the team regardless of position, training experience or strength level. When it really gets to be appalling is when the weights to be used on a certain exercise are already written in ahead of time. Some workout sheets will say something like: Bench Press- 3 sets x 10 reps x 225 pounds. So the 150 pound kicker who has never lifted before and the 375 pound nose tackle who has spent his life in the gym are supposed to do the same exact weight. It will staple one of them to the bench and be a joke for the other; even a first grader could tell you that. This is one glaring mistake I will never understand.

9) Never changing the workout- Too many schools use the same workout month after month and year after year. They have an in season program and an off season program and the workouts NEVER change. Every year, for a good laugh, a Division 1 baseball player I train brings me his teams' workout book at the start of the season. For four years straight, it was the exact same three-day-a-week workout, fifty two weeks a year! Talk about boredom and burn out. I would go absolutely insane if I did the same workout for more than a few weeks straight, never mind four years. If you are getting paid to write workouts for a team, the least you could do is put a little thought into them and add some variety.

10) Constant negativity- After many years working as a strength and conditioning coach I know that most athletes do not respond well to constantly being verbally berated. It is, of course, part of the job, you have to toughen the kids up and earn their respect. But when they hate you and no longer enjoy coming to practice or the weight room, you have ruined what should have been a great experience for them and you have just lowered the performance output of your athletes. I appreciate a hardcore, militant attitude and train most of my athletes in this manner. However we do have fun and lighten up when the work is done. At the end of the day, everyone needs positive reinforcement once in a while or they will just give up or lose interest, it's human nature, look into it.

The intention of this article was not to bash all college strength coaches and head coaches, because, as I stated earlier there are many great ones. It was simply a way of trying to get through to those that have been stuck in their outdated ways for far too long. Hopefully it opened some eyes and will cause at least a few people to take a step back and rethink their strength and conditioning programs. Properly trained athletes win more games, which as a coach, is always your goal. More importantly, when an 18 year old kid puts his or her athletic future in your hands, it is not a responsibility to be taken lightly. The training you give them over the next four years could literally make or break their careers and shape the rest of their lives. Think about that before heading for the copy machine to rehash the same useless workouts you've been using forever
